Nonbei Yokocho: Shibuya’s “Drunkard’s Alley” of Tiny Postwar Bars

Nonbei Yokocho is a narrow lane of roughly 40 tiny bars and izakaya that trace back to around 1950, relocated to its current spot next to the Shibuya Station tracks after a postwar land readjustment. Most of these bars seat only a handful of people, are run single-handedly by their owners, and keep Japanese-only, cash-only operations with their own individual seat charges -- English menus are the exception rather than the norm. For travelers without Japanese, pointing at what's on display or at other customers' plates is a reasonable fallback at most of the lane's bars.
