Jiyuken, Namba Main Store: Osaka’s First Western-Style Restaurant Since 1910
Jiyuken has operated in Namba since 1910, making it one of the oldest Western-style restaurants in Osaka, and is best known for a curry rice served already mixed with a raw egg rather than ladled on top in the usual way. The dish gained a wider following after novelist Sakunosuke Oda, a regular, featured it in his novel Meoto Zenzai; a photo of Oda still hangs in the shop today, next to a line credited to him that reads, roughly, "a tiger dies and leaves its hide behind; Oda Saku dies and leaves curry rice behind." For travelers interested in a century-old slice of Osaka's Western-food history rather than just a meal, it's one of the few remaining addresses where that history is still being served.
