Family-Friendly Restaurants in Osaka: 4 Picks for Traveling With Kids

Osaka, nicknamed the city of “kuidaore” (eat till you drop), is a fun place for families too. Many dishes, like takoyaki and okonomiyaki, are cooked right in front of you, which kids enjoy watching. This guide covers four Osaka restaurants that work well for families: Kukuru Honten, Sushiro Dotonbori and Tsuruhashi Fugetsu Dotonbori Ebisubashi on Dotonbori, and Gyu-Kaku Namba Sennichimae. All are in central Dotonbori and Namba, easy to fit around sightseeing.

How to choose a restaurant with kids

Whether a place suits families usually comes down to practical things: table seating, simple ordering, and a room that tolerates some noise. Dotonbori and Namba have many large restaurants aimed at visitors, and choosing ones with plenty of seats, picture menus or touch-panel ordering makes a calmer meal with kids.

High chairs and kids’ menus are not available everywhere, so ask the staff when you arrive if you need them. Dotonbori gets very crowded on weekends and at night, so take care with strollers in the flow of people.

Dotonbori: Dotonbori Kukuru Honten

BUDGET
Under ¥1,000
AREA
Dotonbori
HOURS
Weekdays: dine-in 11:00-20:30, takeout 10:30-21:30. Weekends/holidays: dine-in 10:30-20:30, takeout 10:00-21:45

Kukuru’s main store is easy to spot by the giant moving octopus sign above its entrance, one of the most photographed storefronts on Dotonbori; kids enjoy the sign alone. Its signature takoyaki uses large octopus pieces finished with a splash of white wine, and you can take away or sit down inside. Weekday hours are 11:00 AM-8:30 PM for dining in and 10:30 AM-9:30 PM for takeout; on weekends and holidays, 10:30 AM-8:30 PM and 10:00 AM-9:45 PM. Regular takoyaki needs no reservation. Fresh takoyaki is very hot inside, so let it cool before handing it to children.

Dotonbori: Sushiro Dotonbori

BUDGET
Under ¥1,000
AREA
Dotonbori

Sushiro is Japan’s largest conveyor-belt sushi chain by store count, and its Dotonbori branch is on the 2nd floor of the Nakaza Cuidaore Building on the canal. Plates start at about 120 yen; take them from the belt or order on the touch panel at your seat. Kids can choose from photos themselves, so ordering works without Japanese. Being in the middle of a tourist hub, waits can be long at mealtimes. Its hours were not confirmed by this site, so check before you go.

Dotonbori: Tsuruhashi Fugetsu, Dotonbori Ebisubashi

BUDGET
¥1,000–3,000
AREA
Dotonbori
HOURS
11:00-23:00 (LO 22:00)

Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is a major Osaka-founded okonomiyaki chain, and this branch is a large 88-seat restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building on the Dotonbori canal. With so many seats, families and groups can sit together easily. The restaurant is entirely non-smoking, serving fluffy okonomiyaki on the teppan. It accepts Visa, Mastercard, PayPay, Alipay and more, handy for travelers carrying little cash. It is open 11:00 AM-11:00 PM (last order 10:00 PM). The teppan is very hot, so keep children’s hands away from it.

Namba: Gyu-Kaku Namba Sennichimae

BUDGET
¥1,000–3,000
AREA
Namba
HOURS
Mon–Fri: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM – 11:00 PM; Sat–Sun: 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Gyu-Kaku is Japan’s largest yakiniku chain, and this branch is a few minutes’ walk from Namba Station in Sennichimae. Seating spreads over the 2nd to 4th floors of its building, so larger families can sit together. You grill meat on a roaster at your table and can choose an all-you-can-eat course. It is open 12:00-3:00 PM and 4:30-11:00 PM on weekdays and 12:00-11:00 PM on weekends, and accepts credit cards and cashless payment. The grill gets hot, so it is best for an adult to do the grilling.

Tips for flour dishes and kaiten-zushi with kids

Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are easy to share as a family. Pass around one boat of takoyaki, or cut okonomiyaki into pieces with the small spatula, to match how much each child eats. This also suits the Osaka way of trying a little at several places.

At many kaiten-zushi shops, each seat has powdered green tea and a tap for very hot water; let an adult handle the tap. Many shops let you choose “sabinuki” (no wasabi) for children, and there are plates such as tamagoyaki and corn for kids who do not eat raw fish.

Rainy or hot days

Sushiro is in the Nakaza Cuidaore Building, Tsuruhashi Fugetsu on the 3rd floor of a canal-side building, and Gyu-Kaku inside a building in Sennichimae, so you can eat indoors at all of them; Kukuru’s dine-in seating also keeps you out of the weather. Walking around with children for long stretches in rain or summer heat is hard, so use these indoor spots to take breaks while sightseeing.

Enjoying Dotonbori as a family

Three of the four are on Dotonbori, so you can stroll the canal in the daytime, try Kukuru’s takoyaki as takeout, then sit down at Sushiro or Tsuruhashi Fugetsu. For yakiniku at dinner, head to Gyu-Kaku in Namba; Ebisubashi, by the Glico sign, is within walking distance of Sennichimae. Crowds grow into the night, so with small children it helps to eat early in the evening.

Which one to choose

For an easy taste of an Osaka specialty, choose Kukuru; for affordable sushi kids can pick themselves, Sushiro; for Osaka okonomiyaki around the teppan, Tsuruhashi Fugetsu; and for meat lovers, Gyu-Kaku.

Budget and payment

Kukuru and Sushiro are in this site’s budget range of up to about 1,000 yen per person; Tsuruhashi Fugetsu and Gyu-Kaku are about 1,000 to 3,000 yen. At kaiten-zushi you pay by the number of plates, easy for a family budget. Tsuruhashi Fugetsu and Gyu-Kaku accept cards and cashless payment.

Before you go

  1. High chairs and kids’ menus vary by shop. If you need them, ask the staff when you arrive.
  2. All of these get busy on weekends and at mealtimes. Going a little off-peak makes it easier to get in.
  3. If anyone has food allergies, always check with the shop before ordering. Takoyaki and okonomiyaki often contain wheat, egg and seafood.
