Yakiniku Tendan Gion Honten: Yakiniku With a Clear Dipping Sauce, in Gion Since 1965
Tendan is a yakiniku restaurant that opened in Gion, Kyoto, in 1965. According to its official site, its signature is a clear, amber dipping sauce (tsuketare) made from beef bones, which it has made in-house since it opened. Dipping grilled meat into this broth-like sauce is the Tendan style, and for the loin, said to suit the sauce best, it serves only sirloin and rib loin. The mille-feuille loin, three thin slices of loin grilled stacked together, is also a popular dish. The Gion Honten is a 2-minute walk from Exit 2 of Keihan Gion-Shijo Station and 4 minutes from Exit 1 (Kiyamachi South entrance) of Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station.
The restaurant is large, with 300 seats, and each floor has its own character. The second floor is a dining floor with table seats, counter seats and private rooms of various sizes, plus a kids' room. The third floor, the Royal Floor, has only private rooms and serves charcoal-grilled yakiniku, with staff in kimono and courses for comparing brand beef such as Ozaki beef, Tankaku beef and Omi beef. The fourth floor is a banquet floor for up to 130 guests, with seats overlooking the Kamo River and sunken-kotatsu tatami rooms. On the fifth floor, a rooftop barbecue garden overlooking the Kamo River opens for a limited season each year.
It is open 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM on weekdays and 11:30 AM to 11:00 PM on weekends and holidays (food last order 10:15 PM, drinks 10:30 PM, courses 10:00 PM); the third-floor Royal Floor closes from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The second and fourth floors take reservations online and by phone, and groups of 20 or more should call. The restaurant is non-smoking with a smoking room, and there is parking for 34 cars. Payment by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners, UC, DC, UnionPay) and Rakuten Edy, WAON, QUICPay, iD, PiTaPa and PayPay is accepted. The official site also has an English menu page.
