Menya Gokkei: Dense Tori-Paitan Ramen on Ichijoji’s Ramen Row

Menya Gokkei is a ramen shop in Ichijoji, a neighborhood in northern Kyoto known among ramen fans as one of the city's most concentrated ramen districts, sometimes called Kyoto's "ramen row." The shop's signature bowl, toridaku, is a chicken white-broth (tori-paitan) ramen made thick enough that reviewers commonly describe a spoon standing upright in the soup. Variations with added chili oil or burnt-garlic oil are also available. Because Ichijoji concentrates several well-known ramen shops within walking distance of each other, Menya Gokkei works well as one stop on a short ramen-focused detour from central Kyoto, though queues are common, especially around lunchtime.
