Aizuya Sohonten: The Birthplace of Takoyaki in Osaka
Aizuya is widely credited with inventing takoyaki. According to its official site, founder Tomekichi Endo started selling radio-yaki, filled with beef and konnyaku, from a stall in Imazato in 1933, and in 1935 put Akashi octopus in a seasoned batter and named it takoyaki. This main store still serves it plain, without the sauce, mayonnaise or bonito flakes now standard elsewhere.
The shop moved to Tamade, Nishinari Ward, in 1993 and is by Exit 1 of Tamade Station on the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line. Per the official menu, the original takoyaki starts at 550 yen for 12. It is takeout-oriented, so most visitors buy a pack and eat nearby.
