Nikujiru Gyoza no Dandadan Shibuya: Hand-Wrapped Juicy Pan-Fried Gyoza, 3 Minutes From Shibuya Station
Nikujiru Gyoza no Dandadan is a gyoza chain that opened its first restaurant, Nikujiru Gyoza Seisakusho Dandadan Sakaba Chofu (now Nikujiru Gyoza no Dandadan Chofu Ichigoten), on Tenjin-dori in Chofu, Tokyo, on January 19, 2011. Its motto is "gyoza and beer are culture." According to its official site, its signature nikujiru yaki-gyoza (juicy pan-fried gyoza) is made to go with rice as well as with drinks. The wrapper is the chain's own, with 7% whole-wheat flour, and is cooked crisp on the bottom and chewy around the sides. The filling of coarsely ground pork and finely chopped vegetables such as cabbage and garlic chives has been wrapped by hand since the first restaurant opened.
The gyoza are seasoned so they can be eaten without any dipping sauce: the official site suggests trying them as they are first, then changing the flavor with chili oil, vinegar or soy sauce. Besides the pan-fried gyoza, the official menu lists boiled gyoza, chicken-wing gyoza and the Ultimate Gyoza Set Meal, built around the gyoza.
The Shibuya branch is on the ground floor of the Kusumoto No. 2 Building in Dogenzaka 1-chome, 3 minutes on foot from Shibuya Station and 6 minutes from Shinsen Station. It is open 11:30 AM to midnight Monday to Thursday and Sunday (food last order 11:00 PM, drinks 11:30 PM), and 11:30 AM to 4:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays (food last order 3:00 AM, drinks 3:30 AM).
